Community Matters

In September 2004, a Quality of Life Survey, as part of the Gaston 2012 Plan was conducted with participants that included community members, leaders and service providers. The purpose of the survey was to obtain input about the following quality of life areas: community assets, community development needs, youth issues, and community health issues.

In July 2005, a nine-member committee composed of representatives from a wide range of health and human service agencies in Gaston County, including education, social services, crisis assistance, health and mental health providers was convened. Using results of the Quality of Life Survey, the 1998 United Way Community Needs Assessment and their own knowledge of the County, the committee was able to identify 21 top priority issues. These were then separated into four priority impact areas:

  • Promoting Health & Wellness
  • Helping Children & Youth Succeed
  • Improving Individual's Employability
  • Providing for the Elderly
